How to Choose the Right Perforation Pattern

Selecting the correct perforation pattern is one of the most critical decisions in any screening, filtration, or architectural project. The wrong geometry can cause excessive pressure drop, structural weakness, or poor sorting efficiency — while the right pattern optimizes performance for decades of service.

Understanding Open Area Percentage

Open area is the ratio of void to solid material, expressed as a percentage. For round holes in a 60° staggered pattern, the formula Open Area % = (D² × 90.69) / P² applies, where D is hole diameter and P is center-to-center pitch. Our online calculator on the homepage lets you model this interactively before specifying.

Never specify a pattern based on appearance alone. Open area governs airflow, filtration throughput, and acoustic transparency — always calculate before ordering.

Pattern Selection by Application

Recommended patterns by use case:

  • Round staggered 60° — HVAC diffusers, general screening, automotive grilles
  • Square straight — Maximum open area facades, ventilation louvers
  • Rectangular slots — Mining screens, grain separation, linear sorting
  • Hexagonal — High airflow automotive and electronics heat dissipation
  • Capsule slots — Acoustic panels and solid-liquid filtration

Material & Thickness Considerations

Bridge width between holes must be sufficient for the material thickness and load requirements. As a rule, bridge width should not be less than the sheet thickness for structural applications. SS 304/316 is preferred for corrosive environments; MS and GI for cost-sensitive industrial screening; aluminium for lightweight architectural work.

Conclusion

Send us your flow rate, particle size, or facade performance targets and our team will recommend an optimal pattern, material grade, and finish. We provide mill test certificates and sample swatches for architect approval before full production runs.
